The New Moon and Shadow Work

The darkness of the new moon is a perfect opportunity for working on the shadow self.


Like the moon each of us has our hidden side.

The shadow self is the repressed or unconscious part of your personality, which is often responsible for repetitive patterns in your life , suppressed dreams and negative emotions.


Hidden in your shadow is your inner child and your beliefs generated from experiences throughout your life which are responsible for certain types of behaviours you have.


Understanding the shadow self and bringing it to light can free you from toxic pattens which you seem to manifest on repeat.



Shadows disappear when the light is shining on them, your conscious mind is the light in this case and just the act of bringing the unconscious to become conscious will set you free.



Being honest with yourself and analysing your own behaviours to find the unconscious trigger can drastically enhance your life and happiness. Hidden in your shadow is repressed trauma and early life lessons which are in-charge of how you react and behave in your current moment. Taking responsibility, sending love , forgiveness and understanding to your unconscious behaviours and experiences can drastically enhance your life and happiness.

Parts of ourselves that have been unloved get moved to the unconscious and as a result can be responsible for certain behaviours you are holding on to at present.


Someone who believes they are just unlucky in certain areas in life should find out the root of this negative pattern and why they continually attract this. It could in actual fact be a lesson taught from an early age or a protection that the self has built previously in their subconscious as a reaction to a previous experience or teaching.

Prepare your space


-Locate yourself in a calm and quite place

on your own where you feel safe


-Doing a sage cleanse before starting any spiritual work or meditation helps bring clarity and improves energy.



When doing shadow work

-You must be completely honest with yourself.

-Don't try and tackle lots of issues at once,

-Don't be hard on yourself or judge yourself for any negative emotions that arrive.

-Send your inner child and any traumatic experiences love and forgiveness.

-Send gratitude for all experiences and lessons


-It’s important not to be scared of the shadow self or see it is a separate entity, rejecting it

and keeping it in the dark does not help transmute it.



Flow writing and journaling

-For me the best way to open the unconscious and understand the whole self is by

journaling and flow writing.

-Begin to write down your feelings (don’t do this with intent or a conscious formula)

-Just write and see what lands on the page, write for as long as you feel necessary.



Ideas to start flow writing

Explore a repetitive pattern in your life and the emotions that go with it

You may want to explore a current struggle or block that you are having

A block in achieving your goals or in your personal relationship

Think what areas of your life you are overwhelmed by or are trying to deny.

Anything that you are trying to ignore or suppress is a sign that you are pushing it in to your shadow and that it needs to be worked on.

Go back in time to a point when someone hurt you or you felt fearful and explore those

emotions and the events surrounding it.


In order to heal ourselves and bring the shadow to light we must forgive those who hurt us

and forgive ourselves for choices we have made.

You will often be surprised as to what comes out on to the paper once you start writing.

You can discover things that you didn't expect.

Flow writing is especially good when you feel overwhelmed with emotion and need some clarity on what you are feeling and why.

Let feelings and emotions appear without judgment. Do not reject any emotions even if they are negative ones, just observe them with love and watch what is being surfaced. You may find guilt, fear, shame, anger, anxiety or hatred, the shadow self holds all the parts that we are told to hide away because they are undesirable or misunderstood.


Honouring, understanding and feeling the emotion that brings us grief is more effective than burying it under layers of emotion and banishing it immediately through denial and in to the shadow.


-Connect the dots by really trying to get to the root emotion and source.

-When it comes down to it, you may realise that emotions such as anger are triggered by

deep sadness or rejection.

-Getting to the source and root of the emotion brings the fear, or negative pattern in to

consciousness thus helping you to understand it. Understanding it helps you to

transmute it and break cycle.


Once the shadow becomes in to consciousness and the energy is transmuted it can no longer control you in the same way
